Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli has said that police are ready to keep law and order during anti-government protests scheduled for today, the 8th of August. He spoke during a press conference at Jogoo House flanked by several senior police officers, including the Deputy Inspector General of Police in Charge of Kenya Police Eliud Lagat.
Masengeli said that protesters were within their democratic rights to protest, provided that they didn’t break the law. He said that the demonstrations, which began peacefully by Gen Z, had been infiltrated by goons who were out to steal and destroy the properties of other Kenyans, maintaining that the government through the police would not allow that.
He added that it was very clear that anyone wishing to hold a demonstration should inform the police through OCS three days before the demonstration for security measures arrangements. Masengeli at the same time warned protestors not to set foot in government. Installations such as airports are highly guarded, and no protestor will be allowed to step foot there. At the same time, he assured members of the public across the country that security would be heightened and that they should go on with their daily businesses as usual.
GenZ’s youths have planned for a nane-nane demonstration tomorrow, which they have named the mother of all demonstrations, demanding the resignation of President William Ruto over alleged poor governance and high levels of corruption in the government.
