Kiambu MCAs Move to Impeach Governor Wamatangi Over Prolonged Doctors’ Strike

Kiambu Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) are considering impeaching Governor Kimani Wamatangi over his failure to resolve the protracted strike by health workers, which has severely affected the delivery of medical services to patients.

The threat came as county residents joined the striking health workers, mainly doctors, in a demonstration against the governor on Monday, 9 October. The strike has now lasted 140 days. “I would like to tell the people of Kiambu that some MCAs and other leaders are going to stand by you in this matter of impeachment,” said Nominated MCA Susan Njeri.

She also criticised Governor Wamatangi for denying that 131 newborns have died as a result of the strike, which has been supported by the Council of Governors. Her remarks provoked outrage from the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), which has threatened to call a nationwide strike on 25 October. “If someone can stand on an altar and dispute the number of babies who have died over the past few months in Kiambu, that person does not deserve to hold a leadership position. He should have left office yesterday,” Njeri declared.

On Monday, KMPDU Secretary-General Dr Davji Atellah also described the situation in the county as dire, citing supervised deaths, illegal medical fees, media suppression, persecution of health workers, and attempts to turn patients against their caregivers.

“These injustices represent a total breakdown of professional ethics and human dignity within Kiambu’s healthcare system,” he stated on his X account. “KMPDU calls for immediate action to restore safety, transparency, and functionality in Kiambu’s health facilities. The lives of both doctors and patients depend on urgent accountability and lasting reform.”
