Moses Kuria Declares Interest In Nairobi Governor’s Seat, Vows To Clean Up The City

‘Dear President William Ruto, today you spoke to my heart. As Prime Minister Baba Raila Amolo Odinga has told me countless times, Nairobi cannot continue to be a city of filth, garbage, and incompetence. I have heard your cry. That is why I will offer myself to serve as Governor of the great County of Nairobi in 2027. I will fix Nairobi,’ wrote the former Gatundu South MP

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has announced his intention to unseat Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, further deepening the political intrigues surrounding the management of the capital. The move comes just weeks after Sakaja narrowly survived an impeachment attempt.

Kuria took to his verified X account to confirm his interest in occupying City Hall, only hours after President William Ruto revealed that he had held discussions with Sakaja about signing an agreement with the private sector to help clean up the city.

“Dear President William Ruto, today you spoke to my heart. Like Prime Minister Baba Raila Amolo Odinga has told me countless times, Nairobi cannot continue to be the city of filth, garbage and incompetence. I have heard your cry. That is why I will offer myself to be the Governor of the great County of Nairobi in 2027. I will fix Nairobi,” wrote the former Gatundu South MP.

The piling up of garbage in both the Central Business District (CBD) and residential estates was one of the reasons Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) sought to oust Sakaja, before President Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga intervened to save him.

Speaking on Sunday during the 70th anniversary celebrations of the Africa Inland Church (AIC) Ziwani in Nairobi, President Ruto said:

“I sat down with the governor and Nairobi MPs, and we came up with a plan to transform Nairobi since it is the face of the country. The initiative will target all our estates, and we are in the final stages of signing an agreement with the private sector on how we are going to clean our city. It cannot continue the way it is.”

Kuria, who resigned as Senior Economic Advisor to the President in July, had previously left many guessing about his political intentions. Some had speculated that the Chama cha Kazi leader might seek to replace Governor Kimani Wamatangi in Kiambu or contest a higher office to serve as a counterweight to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in the Mt Kenya region.

Others who have expressed interest in governing the capital include former Principal Secretary Irungu Kang’ata and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, while ODM is rumoured to be considering Makadara MP George Aladwa as a possible candidate.
