Sifuna Protests Non-Payment of Teachers’ Allowances

By The Weekly Vision Reporter

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has expressed concern over the “persistent and systemic non-payment” of allowances to teachers. Rising in the Senate on Thursday, 30th October, to demand a statement from the Senate Committee on Education regarding the issue, he condemned the delays, saying they affect educators who supervise extracurricular activities and national examinations.

“It has become humiliating for teachers to accompany students to sports and other extracurricular activities without receiving their rightful allowances,” Sifuna, who also serves as Deputy Minority Leader, declared.

He noted that while students are fully facilitated, teachers are left “compromising their ability to secure decent accommodation and meet essential out-of-pocket expenses.”

The Senator further observed that “these allowances remain unpaid even after teachers have diligently fulfilled their duties.”

Sifuna specifically demanded explanations for the non-payment of allowances related to the East African Secondary School Games in Kakamega and the Drama and Music Festivals in Kampala, both held in August 2025. He also requested a clear timeline for payment and policy recommendations to prevent such delays in the future.
