United States President Donald Trump has issued an Executive Order launching the Genesis Mission, a landmark national initiative led by the Department of Energy aimed at transforming American science and innovation through artificial intelligence (AI).
The mission seeks to reinforce the nation’s technological leadership and global competitiveness. This ambitious programme intends to utilise the ongoing AI and advanced computing revolution to double the productivity and impact of American science and engineering within a decade. It promises major breakthroughs to secure American energy dominance, accelerate scientific discovery, and enhance national security.
“Throughout history, from the Manhattan Project to the Apollo mission, our nation’s brightest minds and industries have answered the call when their country needed them,” said US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. “Today, the United States is calling on them once again. Under President Trump’s leadership, the Genesis Mission will unleash the full power of our National Laboratories, supercomputers, and data resources to ensure America remains the global leader in artificial intelligence and ushers in a new golden era of American discovery.”
The announcement builds on Trump’s earlier Executive Order removing barriers to American leadership in AI and advances his America’s AI Action Plan, released earlier this year, a policy framework aimed at dismantling obstacles to innovation, reducing dependence on foreign adversaries, and unlocking the full potential of the nation’s scientific enterprise.
Secretary Wright has appointed Under Secretary for Science Dr Darío Gil to lead the initiative. The Genesis Mission will mobilise the Department of Energy’s 17 National Laboratories, along with industry and academia, to create an integrated discovery platform.
This platform will link the world’s most powerful supercomputers, AI systems, and next-generation quantum technologies with the country’s most advanced scientific instruments. Once completed, it will be the most complex and powerful scientific instrument ever constructed. The mission will draw upon the expertise of approximately 40,000 DOE scientists, engineers, and technical staff, working in partnership with private-sector innovators, to ensure that the United States builds and leads the technologies that will shape the future.
The Genesis Mission is designed to address three major national priorities:
- American energy dominance: Accelerating progress in advanced nuclear, fusion, and grid modernisation using AI to deliver affordable, reliable, and secure energy to the American people.
- Advancing discovery science: Building a quantum ecosystem through strategic investment and collaboration to power future scientific breakthroughs and industries.
- Ensuring national security: Developing cutting-edge AI technologies for defence missions, strengthening the safety and reliability of the US nuclear stockpile, and speeding up the creation of defence-ready materials.
Dr Darío Gil, Under Secretary for Science and Director of the Genesis Mission, stated: “The Genesis Mission marks a defining moment for the next era of American science. We are connecting the nation’s most advanced facilities, data, and computing into one closed-loop system to create a scientific instrument for the ages, an engine of discovery that doubles research productivity and tackles challenges once thought impossible.”
Brandon Williams, Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration, added: “The Genesis Mission represents the next great chapter and an unparalleled opportunity for America’s scientific and national security leadership. Building on decades of innovation and collaboration across our national laboratories, NNSA will harness AI, quantum computing, and advanced data analytics to strengthen our deterrence and ensure the United States maintains an unmatched strategic edge over its adversaries.”
Dr John Wagner, Chair of the National Laboratory Directors’ Council, echoed this sentiment: “DOE’s National Laboratories are engines of discovery that keep the United States competitive and secure. The Genesis Mission unlocks their full potential by giving scientists and engineers the tools to operate at the speed of innovation. Our laboratories have always risen to meet the nation’s greatest challenges, and this initiative ensures that legacy continues in the era of artificial intelligence.”
