All is not well at Siaya Institute of Technology following reports that the institute’s board is involved in tax evasion deals. According to a report by Auditor General Nancy Gathungu dated 14th February 2022, the board knowingly failed to deduct Income Tax on allowances paid to members of the board.
The report reveals how the Board of Governor’s expenses of Ksh.2,224,240 and allowances paid Ksh.1,396,500 in sitting allowances from which taxes were not deducted contrary to Section 5(2)(a) of the Income Tax Act Cap 470 which requires sitting allowances to be taxed at 30% of the gross figure and be remitted to the Commissioner of Domestic Taxes.
Mr Daniel Randa who joined the institute in September 2020 from Sikri Technical Training College has failed to fit in the shoes of his predecessor Mr Odhiambo Okumu who was transferred to Kabete National Polytechnic
The report, therefore, reveals that the management was in breach of the law and should be forced to refund and remit the taxes to the Commissioner of Domestic Tax. The institute’s board chairman is Mr Moses Kawa while the institute’s principal Mr Daniel Randa is the board’s secretary. Other board members are Mr Joel Odhiambo, Mr Lucas Ocharo, Mr Oscar Mjumba and Mr Jona Owiti.
Randa who joined the institute in September 2020 from Sikri Technical Training College has failed to fit in the shoes of his predecessor Mr Odhiambo Okumu who was transferred to Kabete National Polytechnic. Sources say he is a lone ranger who does not work with the team he inherited and this has affected the smooth running of the college.
