Hours after Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakala announced his intention to rename Mutuini Hospital situated in Dagoretti South Sub-County after First Lady Racheal Ruto, a section of Azimio coalition allied MCAs have come out to oppose the move. According to the MCAs, it is too early to rename the facility after Racheal, claiming she has not done anything tangible to warrant such recognition.

Governor Johnston Sakajja

The MCAs now say she should initiate some tangible projects for the people of Nairobi and across the country to be recognized. They claim the first lady should just lobby for funds from an international community to build a health facility in one of the slums of Nairobi and name it in her name.

While making the announcement, governor Sakaja claimed that his administration will give the Mutuini facility a facelift before the renaming. Renaming the facility might prove to be a toll order for Sakaja and Kenya kwanza administration because the process must be approved by the county assembly where Azimio is the majority party.  “We will be bringing a motion Mutuini hospital to rename it to Mama Rachel Ruto Hospital Mutuini,” Governor Sakaja said.

If the motion is tabled before the County Assembly and sails through, Mama Rachel Ruto will join her predecessors, who have health facilities named after them.

The immediate former First Lady has a facility named after her: The Margaret Kenyatta Children Hospital in the Mathare-Korogocho slum.
