ODM party leader Raila Odinga’s political enemies mainly from Luo Nyanza who were once his close buddies have taken the game a notch higher with plans to register a rival political party with the same ODM acronym. According to sources well versed with the new political game plan that is aimed at giving Raila Odinga’s supporters in his base of Luo Nyanza an alternative party ahead of the 2027 elections, the big names behind the move are using former Kisumu CEC for Roads and Public Works Thomas Ondijo Owiti to push for the registration of the party.

Mr Owiti has already written to the Registrar of Political parties Ann Nderitu seeking the reservation of three names for political party registration. Mr Owiti’s letter to the registrar dated 13th March 2023 reads in part “I hereby formally apply for political party name reservation for subsequent registration upon fulfilment of your laid down processes/procedures and conditions as per the law’’

The Weekly Vision has established that the ODM rebels have applied for the reservation of three names ‘ODM Mpya’, ‘ODM Asili’ and ‘ODM Kamili’. It is being said that once Nderitu gives them a go-ahead to register the new party, the real faces behind the move will come out to conduct massive registration drives across the country but with more serious attention to Luo Nyanza.

Several names are being mentioned as the big names behind the move aimed at cutting to size Raila Odinga’s ODM in Luo Nyanza. There are whispers that the big names are Evans Kidero, Nichola Gumbo, Fred Outa, Prof. Tom Ojienda, Okoth Obado, and Peter Owidi among other rebels. Analysts have warned ODM not to ignore the splinter group and the reason behind using the acronym, ODM.

The fear is that following the manner of how shambolic ODM conducted nominations in its perceived strongholds especially Luo Nyanza in the run-up to the last general elections, there are thousands of ODM supporters who were dissatisfied and could easily join the new political outfit to teach Mr Odinga a lasting political lesson.

ODM in a quick rejoinder through Secretary General Edwin Sufuna has written to Nderitu objecting to attempts to register another party with the same initials. Mr Sifuna claims that should the new outfit be enlisted, it will confuse their members and supporters. Although supporters of rebel MPs in Luo Nyanza have welcomed the move, Raila Odinga’s allies have laughed off the move saying it will die on arrival. With two ODM parties, political tempers in Luo Nyanza are expected to hit the rooftop in a move aimed at clipping Raila Oding’s political wings and influence in the region.
