The political supremacy battle between Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has taken a dramatic turn after leaders from the Mount Kenya region expressed concern about how President William Ruto seems to be sidelining his principal assistant, DP Rigathi Gachagua.
What initially began as a simple power struggle between the two leaders, both are said to be eyeing the presidency in future, has exploded into the open with Mount Kenya leaders now plotting to clip Mudavadi’s political wings. Initially, Mudavadi who is known as the gentleman of Kenya’s politics was seen as a weak politician with no serious political ambitions but the man from Sabatia has now come out to be what they never thought he was.
Soon after assuming office sources divulged that Mr Mudavadi started stamping his authority by grabbing power to make the office of the prime CS become a very powerful and active office than was earlier expected, especially in DP Rigathi Gachagua’s camp. Sources within Kenya Kwanza now claim that Mudavadi’s office is even busier than the office of the DP. This has not gone down well with a section of Mount Kenya leaders who feel their son is being sidelined.
There are calls by a section of Mount Kenya leaders that the structure and mandate of the office of the Prime Cabinet secretary be re-looked at from a fresh perspective since it is being seen as the second in command as opposed to the office of the DP.
There have been rumours that President Ruto has given Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi excess powers making him look like the second in command. This has not gone down well with Mount Kenya leaders who believe that Mr Mudavadi has edged their son out. But all said and done, whether it is real or perceived, it is not known to many why President Ruto found it proper to give MM powers against his DP. Another area of concern is why President Ruto finds it necessary to have Mudavadi represent him in international assignments and not Gachagua.
Since their election, Gachagua has not represented the president outside the country but Musalia Mudavadi has been to several high-profile meetings representing the president. This week, Mr Mudavadi represented the president in Abuja during the inauguration of Nigeria’s incoming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In December, Mudavadi represented Ruto at the Commonwealth Trade Investment Summit in London. This did not go down well with Gachagua’s supporters who believe that MM is being favoured by the President and is now playing the role of the DP.
Late last year, Mudavadi was part of Ruto’s delegation to the US African leaders’ summit while in March, he represented the president at the head of states meeting of the Non-aligned Movement Summit in Azerbaijan.
