Sonko Forgives College Student Accused In Court Of Impersonating Him Online

By Collins Wanzallah

A college student has been freed of the offence of allegedly impersonating former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and publishing nude pictures using a Facebook account he had created purporting to be Mr Sonko. Tyson Kibet, 23, was acquitted by trial Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo on Thursday after Mr Sonko presented himself in court to withdraw the case.

Mr Sonko told the court that he decided to forgive the accused after the young man’s family pleaded with him. He insisted that no one had forced him into making the decision, and he would not revive the case. On his part, the student thanked Sonko for forgiving him, maintaining that he would concentrate fully on his education and would not repeat an offence of a similar nature.

He at the same time requested Sonko to employ him in one of his offices or firms so that he could be able to assist his family and pay for his education. Kibet, who is a third-year student at a polytechnic, had been charged in May this year before Milimani Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi for the offence. He denied charges of cybersquatting, contrary to Section 28 of the Computer Misuse Act.
