Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, his mother, and several senior county officials are being investigated over accusations of their involvement in the gang rape of a local blogger. The case, which has attracted widespread public interest, is currently under judicial review.
In an affidavit presented to Shanzu Resident Magistrate Robert Mbogo, Police Corporal Irene Karuga from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) outlined the accusations and the progress of the investigation. The blogger, known for his outspoken views on Mombasa County politics, alleges that he was abducted and assaulted by individuals connected to the governor shortly after publishing a critical post. He claims he was gang-raped and left for dead in Mwakirunge.
Corporal Karuga informed the court that the investigation involves serious offences, including abduction (under Section 259 of the Penal Code), gang rape, and conspiracy to commit a felony. She suggested that the crimes may have been orchestrated by Governor Nassir and his associates. The court also heard that Nassir and his allies may have helped some suspects escape arrest. Karuga warned that releasing the suspects on bond could compromise the investigation and threaten public safety due to the high-profile nature of the case. She noted, “There have been ongoing communications involving more than fifteen suspects, and releasing them could obstruct further investigations.”
Additionally, Karuga emphasized the importance of pending DNA analysis for comparing evidence with samples taken from the victim, cautioning that releasing the suspects could delay key forensic procedures. Four suspects—Abdul Hassan, Haji Babu Ndau, Esther Muthoni (alias Totoos), and Violet Adera (alias Vyaoo)—have appeared in court. Authorities reportedly faced difficulties apprehending them, citing interference from county officials. The case remains ongoing as investigations continue.
