Friends Namanja School Says Farewell to Renowned Principal Wafula Kharemwa

The Kenya Secondary Heads Association (KESSHA) Kakamega North has commended Principal John Wafula Kharemwa of Friends Namanja Secondary School for his exemplary leadership ahead of his retirement. Similarly, the Friends Quakers Church, which sponsors the school, praised the retiring principal for his outstanding service during his tenure.

During a farewell event, both groups applauded Principal Wafula’s management skills, describing him as an exceptional leader with a deep understanding of school administration. Led by Madam Salano Simwa, Principal of Friends Mang’uliro Secondary and Chairperson of the KESSHA welfare committee, the association expressed pride in Wafula’s achievements. His efforts to initiate various projects, boost enrollment, and enhance the school’s academic performance were recognized for bringing the institution into the spotlight.

Other KESSHA members in attendance, including Martin Waswa (Principal, Bulupi Secondary), Paul Shitanda (Matioli Salvation Army), Francis Memeti (Namushiya), Philip Andala (Shirugu), Joy Okech Mulama (Vashele), Catherine Kasembeli Shitikho (Manyonje), and current principal Shem Memeti Kulecho, also praised Wafula’s contribution, wishing him a peaceful and fulfilling retirement.

Representing the Friends Church, General Superintendent Cleopas Kharinda and Presiding Clerk Dr. Harrison Kavingwa emphasized the strong relationship between the school and its sponsor. They highlighted that the church has always worked well with principals regardless of their religious background, as long as they respected their doctrines. Mr Kavingwa encouraged Wafula’s successor, Principal Memeti, to uphold the positive working relationship and ensure continuity.

The school’s Board of Management, led by Dr. Isaac Motochi Taracha, also commended Principal Wafula for his collaboration in launching key projects, including a new physics laboratory. Dr. Taracha noted that Wafula’s quiet but effective leadership saw the school’s population grow from 400 to 900 students in just five years. He also successfully secured a new school bus, which is currently in the design phase.

The incoming principal, Shem Memeti Kulecho, expressed confidence in continuing the school’s upward trajectory. He pledged to honour Wafula’s legacy by increasing university admissions in the upcoming Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams. Memeti also thanked the Ministry of Education, local Member of County Assembly (MCA) Kevin Mahelo, and the area Member of Parliament (MP) for their continued support in advancing the school’s progress.

MCA Kevin Mahelo (Butali/Chegulo Ward) assured the 2024 KCSE candidates of his ongoing support, including providing meals during the examination period.
