Kajiado Leaders Push President Ruto to Act on IEBC Reconstitution at Jamhuri Day Celebrations

Leaders in Kajiado County have called on President William Ruto to urgently reconstitute the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), citing its absence as a source of national uncertainty and disadvantage for certain communities. Speaking during Jamhuri Day celebrations at Oloitiptip Stadium in Loitoktok, Governor Joseph Lenku emphasized that the lack of a fully operational IEBC is creating tension and frustrating democratic processes.

According to Lenku, regions such as Baringo, home to the Ilchamus sub-group of the Maa community, are among those adversely affected by the commission’s absence. He noted that President Ruto’s directive to elevate the recently created sub-county into a constituency has stalled, further disenfranchising residents. “Without an electoral body, some regions remain unrepresented despite voters being ready to exercise their democratic rights,” Lenku said.

The governor also underscored the urgency of initiating a boundary review process to ensure the 2027 general election proceeds smoothly. “Kenyans are at a crossroads due to the lack of an electoral body. This issue must be addressed to uphold our democracy,” he added.
Governor Lenku, who also serves as the Maa community spokesperson, called for national dialogue to address critical political and socio-economic challenges. “National unity and cohesion can only be achieved if leaders humble themselves and listen to the concerns of citizens and stakeholders,” he stated.
Other leaders at the event echoed Lenku’s sentiments, including Senator Samuel Kanar, Kajiado South MP Samuel Parashina, and local MCAs. The leaders stressed that resolving the IEBC stalemate is key to maintaining political stability and ensuring fair representation.

Despite a heavy downpour, residents turned up in large numbers to celebrate Jamhuri Day, showcasing the vibrant Maa culture through traditional songs, dances, and attire, adding a festive note to the otherwise serious discussions. Leaders concluded the event by urging swift government action to address the concerns raised, ensuring no Kenyan is left without representation or a voice in the country’s governance.
