National Assembly to Vet Ruto’s Cabinet Picks Following Recent Reshuffle

The Clerk of the National Assembly has invited the public to submit objections regarding the nominees’ suitability for the proposed positions. Submissions must be accompanied by sworn written statements (affidavits) and supporting evidence and should be delivered to the Clerk’s office or emailed no later than January 3, 2025, by 5:00 p.m.

The National Assembly will begin to vet President William Ruto’s nominees for Cabinet Secretaries and other senior government officials on January 9, 2025. According to a notice from Clerk of the National Assembly, Samuel Njoroge, the vetting process will involve three key committees.

The Committee on Appointments will vet Cabinet Secretary nominees on January 14, while the Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations will assess nominees for ambassadorial and diplomatic posts on January 10. Meanwhile, nominees for the Public Service Commission will face the Departmental Committee on Labour on January 9th.

This exercise follows Article 118(1)(b) of the Constitution and Section 6(4) of the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act (Cap. 7F), which empowers parliamentary committees to conduct approval hearings.

Public Participation Encouraged

Clerk Njoroge has called on the public to submit representations contesting the nominees’ suitability for the proposed positions. Submissions must include written statements on oath (affidavits) with supporting evidence and be delivered to the Clerk’s office or emailed by January 3, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.

Nominees are required to present their original identification documents, academic and professional credentials, and letters of compliance from agencies including the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

President Ruto’s nominations are part of a broader strategy to strengthen leadership in key sectors and advance the administration’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). The reshuffle seeks to optimize service delivery and inject fresh energy into critical government operations.

Notable nominees to be vetted include:

  • Agriculture and Livestock: Mutahi Kagwe (January 14, noon)
  • ICT: William Kabogo (January 14, 3:00 p.m.)
  • Investments, Trade, and Industry: Lee Kinyanjui (January 14, 5:00 p.m.)

For ambassadorial and diplomatic posts:

  • Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u (High Commissioner to Ghana)
  • Ababu Namwamba (Permanent Representative to UNEP/UNON)
  • Dorothy Angote (High Commissioner to Zimbabwe)
  • Dr. Andrew Karanja (Ambassador to Brazil)

Under the Departmental Committee on Labour, key appointments include:
