Meru’s Political Landscape Evolves Ahead of 2027 Vote

Even before the situation surrounding the impeachment case of the embattled Meru Governor, Kawira Mwangaza could settle, significant political realignments are already beginning to take shape in Meru County ahead of the 2027 elections.

Analysts predict a highly competitive contest for Meru County voters, with a potential rematch on the horizon between two former governors who are preparing to face off again in 2027. According to sources, Peter Munya, Meru’s first governor, has been quietly strategizing to reclaim the seat he lost in 2017 after serving just one term. Reports suggest that former Governor Kiraitu Murungi has also been actively engaging in behind-the-scenes campaigning to regain the seat he lost to Kawira Mwangaza in 2022.

The upcoming election is expected to see a fierce rivalry between Kiraitu and Munya, with the possibility of additional candidates entering the fray. However, as Isaac Mutama assumes the role of governor, many have dismissed his candidacy for the 2027 elections as unviable.

Political observers in Meru County have noted that several influential figures advocated for the impeachment of Kawira Mwangaza before the 2027 elections, recognizing that defeating her as the sitting incumbent would have presented a considerable challenge. Consequently, these figures have reportedly conspired to remove her ahead of the polls, paving the way for her deputy’s succession. Many have characterized Mutama as a placeholder, with little expectation of him being a serious contender for the 2027 governorship.

Sources suggest that by 2027, Mutama may be in a stronger position to back one of the leading candidates—either Kiraitu or Munya—and step aside from the governorship. Should he decide to pursue re-election, however, he would only be eligible for one term, as his previous half-term is constitutionally considered a full term.

Kiraitu appears to be realigning his political affiliations with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. He has been vocal in his criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration, aligning himself with the opposition. Kiraitu’s stance against the government is largely due to his political rivalry with Munya, who has connections with former President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga, both of whom have established amicable ties with President William Ruto.

Speculation is also rife regarding Munya’s possible inclusion in the cabinet during the upcoming reshuffle. Should this happen, it would place him in a strong position to challenge Kiraitu in the 2027 elections.

The political manoeuvring of other prominent figures in Meru County, and their decisions on which candidates to support, remains to be seen as the 2027 elections draw closer.
