Speaker Roba’s Sudden Resignation Triggers Political Storm in Isiolo

By TWV Political Desk

In a dramatic twist that has sent shockwaves across Isiolo County, Assembly Speaker Mohamed Roba has tendered his resignation under circumstances that raise more questions than answers. While his official letter cited “personal reasons,” observers suggest a deeper strategic manoeuvre is at play, one that could significantly alter the county’s leadership landscape.

The resignation announced amid an escalating political storm surrounding the planned impeachment of Governor Abdi Guyo has fueled speculation that Roba is positioning himself to step in as deputy governor should the impeachment succeed. Stakeholders in neighbouring Mandera County, where Roba has considerable influence, also expressed surprise at the abrupt move.

“Roba’s resignation was entirely unexpected,” said a county official. “No one saw it coming, not even those close to the assembly leadership.” At the centre of the unfolding drama is a motion to impeach Governor Guyo, tabled by Sericho MCA Abubakar Godana. The motion, which accuses the governor of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violation of constitutional principles, has received unanimous backing from all 18 members of the County Assembly.

Godana has levelled serious accusations against Guyo, including breaches of Chapter Six of the Constitution, the Leadership and Integrity Act, and the Public Officers’ Ethics Act. However, the impeachment process was paused after Guyo moved to court. Justice The High Court, through Justice Heston Nyaga, issued a conservatory order restraining the Assembly from processing or debating the motion pending the determination of the case. The court also ordered the Assembly to provide the Governor with all documents supporting the motion within two days, 48 hours, and allowed both parties to file supplementary affidavits.

Insiders allege that Speaker Roba had been collaborating closely with MCAs (Members of the County Assembly), many of whom were reportedly camping in Machakos to strategise the governor’s removal. This marks a significant departure from the past, as Roba had initially risen to the Speaker’s position with Guyo’s backing.

The fallout between Roba and the two Guyo leaders appears to have culminated in Roba’s resignation, a move analysts interpreted as a carefully timed strategy to clear his path to a higher office. By relinquishing his role, Roba may be removing potential conflicts to pave for his nomination as deputy governor should the impeachment succeed.

“It is highly likely that Roba’s resignation is linked to the current power struggle,” said a political analyst. “He’s a key figure in the anti-Guyo camp, and his sudden departure suggests a succession plan is in motion.”

As the dust settles, one thing is clear: Isiolo County is in the grip throes of a full-blown leadership crisis. The outcome of the impeachment and Roba’s role may reshape power dynamics in the region for years.
