The return of the immediate former Mombasa County Governor Hassan Ali Joho to the political mainstream has sent cold shivers down the spine of President William Ruto’s handlers, sources say. Mr Joho has been missing in action until last week when he came back from the US and announced his return to the political mainstream of the Azimio coalition.
According to well-placed sources, Joho’s return caused panic among President Ruto’s supporters more so after he announced that he will personally lead the Mombasa demonstration. Of great concern to the KK leadership is the fact that Joho’s return has watered down a secret agreement between Mombasa Governor Nassir Abdullswamad Sheriff and President Ruto, Mr Nasir recently declared that there will be no demos in Mombasa. Sources say Mr Nasir who has met President William Ruto more than 3 times lately seems to have a soft spot for Ruto’s government. Mr Joho’s return has however complicated matters for the governor.

Azimio coalition is aware of the dire economic situation in the country and knows that paralyzing both Mombasa and Nairobi will be counterproductive if not handled well. It has been discovered that with the disruption of operations at the port of Mombasa, the country’s revenue target will not be met and hence calls for a more serious political dialogue between Azimio and Kenya Kwanza.
With Joho’s return, the KK leadership knows well that he can bring to a standstill most activities in Mombasa hence the need to bring him on board. Sources say there have been attempts to lure him to join KK but with little success. The man Ruto assigned the responsibility to bring Joho on board is former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko. Sonko and Joho are friends though in different political camps.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that he had been offered a CAS position but he declined. With Mr Joho now firmly in Azimio, it will be interesting to see how he will push for the demonstrations in Mombasa County starting this Thursday.
