Top Lawyers Jostle To Take Over From Kennedy Ogeto As Solicitor-General 

The Public Service Commission has already invited applications from persons seeking to fill the position, sources told The Weekly Vision that the behind-the-scenes lobbying is in top gear.The law provides that the solicitor general serves for five years with a window for renewal for another term. Mr Ogeto’s term is thus set to end in March 2023

Barely three months before the expiry of his contract big names in the legal fraternity are already lining up as possible successors to Solicitor-General Kennedy Ogeto’s job. The Solicitor General is the Principal Assistant to the Attorney General and works closely with the AG in the performance of his duties.

Already, the Public Service Commission has invited applications from persons seeking to fill the position. Sources told The Weekly Vision that the behind-the-scenes lobbying is in top gear. The outgoing Solicitor was appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta in March 2018 for five years. The law provides that the solicitor general serves for five years with a window for renewal for another term. Mr Ogeto’s term is thus set to end in March 2023.

Prominent Lawyer Katwa Kigen Kigen is being mentioned as a possible successor to Mr Ogeto. It is said that Ruto would want a very trusted lieutenant to hold this position. Mr Kigen represented William Ruto at The Hague during the Ocampo 6 trial.

Another name mentioned is that of Korir Sing’oei. He was a Legal Advisor at the Executive Office of the Deputy President during Ruto’s tenure as DP. He was also the Head of Law and Policy and Convenor of the Open Government Partnership in Kenya. He is a close ally of Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen.  It is also being whispered that the East African Court of Justice Judge Charles Nyachae could resign to take up the Solicitor General’s job.

He was nominated by President Uhuru after the 2017 elections after he failed to clinch a position in the East Africa Legislative Assembly. He is a former chairman of the defunct Constitutional Implementation Committee (CIC) and in 2017; he vied for the Kisii Senate but lost.
