Immediate former Nairobi City County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura’s political career may have come to an abrupt end, at least for now. Mr Mutura believes the Kenya Kwanza leadership gave him a raw deal. Mr Mutura who is a former Makadara MP had intended to run for the Makadara parliamentary seat during the last elections but was convinced by Kenya Kwanza leadership to drop out with a promise of being supported as the next speaker of the County Assembly.
Mr Mutura leaned towards Azimio politically at the time but fell out with the party’s top leadership after a section of MCAs allied to Azimio told the coalition’s leadership that he was a spy for Kenya Kwanza.
The revelation resulted in big fallout and he became a wanted man. At one time, there were attempts to humiliate him when DCI officers attempted to arrest him but the MCAs allied to Kenya Kwanza protested, he was later summoned to appear before the DCI, processed and arraigned in court over alleged theft of Ksh. 5.3 million. He was accused of having stolen the money from Nairobi County between February 1st 2021 and February 28, 2022. He was however freed on a cash bail of Ksh. 500,000. After paying the cash bail, the accused claimed that he was being victimized over his relationship with Deputy President William Ruto.
After the elections, Mutura presented his papers for nomination as county speaker however; the County Assembly Clerk Edward Gichana said Mutura did not meet the requirements as per the gazette notice. To the surprise of many, Mutura did not submit a certificate of good conduct which was a basic requirement.
After being locked out, Murtura is said to have tried in vain to seek an appointment with President William Ruto to secure a state job. A source at City Hall told The Weekly Vision that with a pending corruption case hanging over his head, he cannot be issued with a certificate of good conduct.
