The OCPD also cautioned road users along the Butula-Nambale-Teso south-Malaba road to be cautious when using the road saying that it has many trucks ferrying sugarcane. He said that the road which has been earmarked for tarmacking is very busy with trucks carrying sugarcane to various factories around the region and has seen many people getting involved in accidents as a result of not being aware of the trucks on the road
At least four commercial motorcycle operators commonly known as ‘bodabodas’ died from injuries they sustained as a result of road accidents in Butula sub-county in Busia County during the Christmas period. Confirming the reports, OCPD Jacob Chelimo attributed the loss of lives to the failure to observe traffic rules on their part.
He said that most of the raiders have on several occasions failed to follow the laid down traffic rules. ‘ Some of them have tragically died as a result of overspeeding, riding under the influence of drugs and alcohol and the failure in correctly negotiating at the corners of the road sometimes at very high speed,” said the OCPD on the phone to The Weekly Vision reporter.
He added that the Bumala-Butula-Mumias road needs signposts and bumps erected afresh, especially in areas deemed as black spots where most of the accidents happen. ”Along the road which stretches for about 20-30 kilometres to Mayoni at the border between Busia and Kakamega counties, there are few bumps erected along the road and its better if the Kenya national highways authority (KeNHA) can help by erecting more bumps so that the occurrence of many of the accidents can be minimized not only for motorbikes but motorists too, said the OCPD.
The OCPD also cautioned road users along the Butula-Nambale-Teso south-Malaba road to be cautious when using the road saying that it has many trucks ferrying sugarcane. He said that the road which has been earmarked for tarmacking is very busy with trucks carrying sugarcane to various factories around the region and has seen many people getting involved in accidents as a result of not being aware of the trucks on the road. He at the same time said that together with other stakeholders they will continue sensitizing bodaboda riders and other road users on the importance of observing traffic rules.
Elsewhere a resident of Buranga in Bujumba area of Butula Sub County suffered a loss on January 03 his grade cow fell into an open toilet that had not been properly covered. Peter Obuya said that one of his grandchildren had tied the cow using a rope near the hole oblivious to the danger posed to the animal.
”I had guests the previous day here as I marked my birthday where I slaughtered a cow for them and I am told some of them used the logs that I had used to cover up the hole as firewood to cook and roast the meat, I was planning to build it up. I thank God that it was not a family member who was involved,” said Obuya. He said that he would have earned between Khs. 60 000 to Ksh. 80 000 were he to sell it. Mr Obuya has now embarked on the process of filling up the hole to avoid tragic losses in the future.
