Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is weighing a decision that could shape the trajectory of Kenya’s 2027 general election: whether to seek the presidency himself, accept a subordinate role on an opposition ticket, or step back into the role of kingmaker for a rival candidate better placed to unseat President William Ruto.
Fresh polling among voters opposed to the Ruto administration suggests many believe Gachagua’s most decisive contribution to the 2027 race would come not from his own candidacy, but from throwing his considerable political weight behind whichever opposition figure emerges as the strongest challenger. That reading of public sentiment has placed the Democracy for Citizens Party leader in an unusually powerful, if delicate, position as opposition alliances begin to take shape.
The former Deputy President has already signalled an openness to working with a younger generation of opposition figures. His recent offer to mentor Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, whose profile has risen sharply in recent months, has stirred speculation in political circles about the shape any future Mt Kenya-anchored alliance might take.
Gachagua retains substantial sway in Mt Kenya, a region whose voting patterns have repeatedly proved decisive in national contests. That influence is, however, not uncontested. Rivalries within the region and shifting political allegiances are testing his capacity to hold the bloc together. Allies point to his organisational reach and campaign experience as reasons he remains indispensable to any opposition arithmetic; sceptics within the opposition counter that a splintered Mt Kenya vote would hand Ruto a considerable advantage heading into 2027.
According to people close to Gachagua, he is deliberately withholding a firm commitment until he has a clearer sense of how the numbers stack up. “He wants a united front that can actually win, not just make noise,” one ally close to the former Deputy President told The Weekly Vision. “Removing the current administration is the priority, and he’s open to whatever arrangement gets that result.”
Negotiations among opposition figures are expected to intensify over the coming weeks as they attempt to settle on a coherent joint strategy ahead of the polls. Whichever path Gachagua ultimately chooses- pursuing the presidency in earnest, accepting a deputy slot, or brokering a coalition from behind the scenes- his decision is likely to be a defining factor in whether the opposition can mount a credible challenge to Ruto next year.
With economic pressures continuing to weigh on households and public frustration showing few signs of easing, the political stakes attached to his choice are considerable. For Gachagua, the calculation has moved beyond personal ambition to a harder question: how his influence can be deployed most effectively in a political landscape that is shifting by the week.
