Renowned Kenyan lawyer Dr Miguna Miguna is set to return to the country from Canada after being in exile for 5 years. The lawyer was deported from the country on February 7, 2018, on grounds of treason after he took part in the swearing-in of ODM party leader Raila Odinga in a mock ceremony at Uhuru Park. He claims that President William Ruto’s new government gave him a new Kenyan passport, a move that will see his return to the country soon.

“1687 days after (former president) Uhuru Kenyatta, (former Prime Minister) Raila Odinga, (Interior Cabinet Secretary) Fred Matiang’i, (Interior Principal Secretary) Karanja Kibicho and (former Directorate of Immigration boss) Gordon Kihalangwa conspired illegally seize and destroyed my Kenyan passport. President William Ruto has had a new one delivered to me. Waiting for the lifting of red alerts!” He wrote on Twitter.

Migun Miguna had previously made various attempts to make his way back to the country but his efforts were all thwarted after the government claimed that he had obtained dual citizenship, a Kenyan and later on a Canadian at a time when the Kenya law did not support dual citizenship, and as a such, the government argued that he had forfeited his Kenyan citizenship.

In a past statement issued by Interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i, the government argued that Dr Miguna never applied for Kenyan nationality once the constitution changed in 2010 to allow for dual nationality, claims that the lawyer rubbished saying nothing could nullify his birthright since he was Kenyan by birth. “There are court rulings in place by the high court on how you regain citizenship after you lost citizenship in the old constitution.
