Kiraitu Murungi ‘s strategy was to ensure that there was a massive rebellion against Mwangaza by the MCA’s , a move that led to the impeachment motion. Their plan worked and an impeach motion against Mwangaza was formally tabled at the county assembly yesterday. What is surprising to commentators is that an overwhelming 68 MCAs signed the petition while only one MCA stayed away from the exercise. There are 69 MCAs in Meru County
The Immediate former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi who was humiliated by Kawira Mwangaza in the last general elections is a man on a mission. The mission according to sources who have been keenly following political events as they unfold in Meru County Assembly divulged to The Weekly Vision that Kiraitu is the engine behind the proposed impeachment of Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
It has been discovered that when Kiraitu lost to the political greenhorn Mwangaza, his political strategists did not rest until they came up with a strategy that was to see the new governor thrown out within the shortest possible time. The strategy was to ensure that there was a massive rebellion against her by the MCA, a move that was to lead to impeachment. True to their plan, a motion to impeach Mwangaza has formally been tabled at the county assembly. What is surprising to commentators is that an overwhelming 68 MCAs signed the petition while only one MCA stayed away from the exercise. There are 69 MCAs in Meru County.
Kiraitu’s move was to ensure that once Mwangaza is impeached, he will be the automatic candidate to run for the governorship under Kenya Kwanza Coalition. Kiraitu is said to have blamed his loss on then Agriculture CS Peter Munya. It is alleged that Munya and his allies campaigned against Kiraitu and urged their supporters to vote for Mwangaza
Interestingly, the assembly is controlled by the Azimio coalition with 25 MCAs against Kenya Kwanza Alliance’s 14. Five MCAs were elected on an independent ticket. Meru County has 45 elective wards. Murungi’s Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) secured 13 MCA seats, UDA (12), Jubilee (6), PNU (5), Independent (5), National Ordinary People’s Empowerment Union (Nopeu) (2), DP (1) and DPK (1).
It has been discovered that the MCAs are following the script as drafted by Kiraitu’s strategists. It should be remembered that after DP Ruto was declared the president and even before the Supreme Court could deliver its ruling, Kiraitu led several MCA’s in defecting from Azimio to Kenya Kwanza.
Kiraitu’s move was to ensure that once Mwangaza is impeached, he will be the automatic candidate to run for the governorship under Kenya Kwanza Coalition. Kiraitu is said to have blamed his loss on then Agriculture CS Peter Munya. It is alleged that Munya and his allies campaigned against Kiraitu and urged their supporters to vote for Mwangaza. Mwangaza who contested as an independent garnered a total of 209,148 votes, against her closest competitor Mithika Linturi of UDA who polled 183, 859 votes and Kiraitu Murungi of the Mbus party who trailed with 110, 814 votes.
Sources claim, during the campaigns, Mwangaza’s competitors especially Kiraitu perceived her as a non-starter who had no agenda and ability to lead the county. Surprisingly, she however led in six out of nine sub-counties defeating Kiraitu on his home turf where she garnered 31,921 votes against Murungi’s 22,359 votes. As things stand now, Mwangaza will surely be impeached by the Assembly and could only be saved by the Senate. However, considering that the Senate has almost equal numbers allied to Kenya Kwanza and Azimio, chances are very high that the Senate could save her skin since rising a simple majority could be a toll order for Kenya Kwanza
