Meru County Governor Kawira Mwangaza Impeached

The governor had earlier threatened to sue Speaker Ayub Bundi and the Assembly if it proceeded with the impeachment motion terming their move as contempt of court before the motion could kick off through her attorney. She argued in a letter addressed to the Meru County Speaker that the Assembly’s standing orders forbid MCAs from discussing any matter that is pending in court

Meru County governor Kawira Mwangaza’s fate now lies with the Senate which is expected to uphold or overturn her impeachment motion that was voted for by 67 out of 69 Meru County MCAs. The MCAs voted in support of her ouster citing nepotism, illegal appointments, unlawful dismissals, insubordination, contempt of court, bullying, vilification, and misleading campaigns against other leaders as well as provocations as the justifications for her removal. “The County Assembly Members who voted for her ouster were 67, two members were absent.

“Governor Kawira Mwangaza stands impeached by the Meru County Assembly,” the House’s Speaker said after the votes were tallied. The Governor had recently escaped impeachment after a Meru high court quashed an impeachment motion filed by Abogeta West MCA Dennis Kiogora terming the motion as unlawful. The governor who was expected to appear at the county assembly to defend her seat was a no-show.

She argued in a letter addressed to the Meru County Speaker that the Assembly’s standing orders forbid MCAs from discussing any matter that is pending in court.

“Proceeding with the same shall be deemed as contempt of court which shall attract the appropriate legal action against any contemnors who shall be held personally liable,” the lawyer stated. Despite her woes, the embattled governor whose final fate is unknown for now asserts that her ouster was a plot by her opponents but she remains confident that she will sail through. “Tell those foxes that I am not afraid of them and their impeachment. I am here to stay, today, tomorrow, next year, and 10 years to come until I deliver to the people of Meru,”
