Kalonzo Musyoka At Crossroads Over President Ruto’s Cabinet Offer

We have information that President Ruto reached out to Kalonzo Musyoka through Mutula Kilonzo Jr. When he rejected the offer, Mutula went ahead to openly declare that he was ready to work with Ruto’s administration. But sources now say that he has not closed the door to the idea of working with Ruto. There have been whispers that should he fail to see the light at the end of the tunnel in Azimio, he is likely to settle for any position in the Ruto government

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is a man under siege, politically speaking. Kalonzo has lost his political influence in the larger Ukambani region after his close allies deserted him to work with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza. When President Ruto made a tour of the Ukambani region last weekend, a majority of Wiper party elected leaders were in attendance, it was a clear indication that Kalonzo Musyoka no longer call shots in the region. The rate at which the Wiper party leader is being deserted by his close allies is worrying.

It started with Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr and now Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti. The two governors have told those who care to listen that they are firmly behind President Ruto’s leadership and that they have no time for opposition politics. All said and done, Kalonzo Musyoka could soon be out of the opposition.

President Ruto publicly said that Mr Kalonzo rejected his offer of Speaker and Foreign Affairs slots when forming his cabinet, but that could just be a drop in the ocean. There have been whispers that should he fail to see the light at the end of the tunnel in Azimio, he is likely to settle for any position in the Ruto government.

Sources have told The weekly Vision that Kalonzo Musyoka has given himself up to August 2023 which is a year after elections to monitor the opposition’s moves and should he in his own opinion see no future in opposition politics then he could eat the humble pie, swallow his pride and join William Ruto in readiness for the 2027 elections. Kalonzo is convinced that Raila Odinga will still run for the presidency in 2027 with Martha Karua as his running mate which limits Kalonzo Musyoka’s chances of running for presidency under the Azimio coalition. The big question, therefore, is which position will Kalonzo settle for in the Ruto administration? There are whispers that if he agrees to work with Ruto, a position of Deputy Chief Minister could be created to accommodate him.

Again the big question is whether he will agree to deputize Musalia Mudavadi. It is said Kalonzo seems to be so desperate for any government post and might easily agree to take the less influential and lucrative position of deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary.  Other sources close to him however dismiss the claim that their man could join President Ruto’s administration saying the former VP is busy planning for his 2027 presidential bid either within Azimio or as a Wiper candidate.
